Tecno have launched their latest smartphone in Kenya; the Tecno Camon 17 which is already available for sale with an initial retail price of Ksh. 17,899 for the 4 + 128GB variant and Ksh. 18,777 for the 6+128GB.
The Camon 17 takes over from last year's Camon 16 and has a number of exiting specs including a big screen, 90Hz refresh rate and a powerful MediaTek Helio G85 processor.
It features a 6.6 inch IPS LCD screen exactly the same size as the Infinix Hot 10 lite. The highlight of this phone is the 90Hz refresh rate, an exiting feature that we saw in last year's Camon 16 Premier. However comes with a disappointingly low display resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels resulting in a low pixel Density of 267 ppi. We expected that Tecno would give us a full HD display in this phone but it looks like we will still have to wait for a long time before we see a budget Tecno phone with such level of display quality.
The phone is made of a Glass front, Plastic back and a plastic frame, and just like the display we will still have to wait for a while before we see a glass back or metallic frame in a budget Tecno phone. The phone has a punch hole display which Tecno calls a dot o display and apart from the slight bottom chin the phone has very thin side bezels achieving an impressive 90% screen-to-body ratio. There is no mention of Gorilla Glass Protection on this phone and if you will buy one you will have to be extra careful with your phone. the
Being a 2021 phones it ships with Android and we hope Tecno have done something about their heavy bloatware and annoying ads that are characteristic of their BiOS skins. It also spots the Mediatek Helio G85 processor, a 12nm fabricated chipset that has an Octa-core CPU with a top clock-speed of 2.0 GHz. This is a powerful mid-range gaming chipset that is already powering a number of budget phones including the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9, realme 7i and realme Nazro 20 to name just but a few.
You can choose between three memory Variants of 3+64 GB, 4+64 or 4+ 128 GB, available in three color variants of Forest Green, Midnight Grey and Polar White.
In the camera department the Redmi Note 9 comes with a total of five Cameras, four in the rear and one in front. The rear cameras are made up of a primary 48 MP wide lens, an 8MP ultrawide lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP depth sensor. Supported Camera features include LED flash, panorama and HDR, and can shoot 1080p videos, the same as the 13MP selfie camera.
The phone is powered by a non removable 5,020 mAh battery with 18W fast charge support and 9W reverse charging.
