The Samsung Galaxy A50 is a mid-range Smartphone from Samsung currently retailing at around $184 in the US. It features a 6.4 inch Super AMOLED display, a Triple camera setup and a 4,000 mAh battery with 15W fast charge.

After what looked like a long struggle, Samsung are finally on track when it comes to mid-range and budget Smartphones. After their J series failed to impress, they are now doing a good job with their M and A series Smartphones and are now competing very well with mid-range brands like Xiaomi Oppo and OnePlus.

The Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with an impressive 6.4 inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display with a good pixel density and 84.9% screen to body ratio. This is the major plus for this phone compared to it's Competition, and while the likes of realme 6 come too close with a FHD+ display, the IPS LCD is no match to the super AMOLED that results in sharp display graphics with detail and rich color.

It also features a triple camera setup with a 25 MP primary camera, an 8 MP Ultrawide lens and a 5 MP depth sensor and a single 25 MP front camera from your selfies. The camera performance as we will see later is surprisingly good, though it can't fully catch up with it's close Competition especially the Tecno Camon 16 Premier.

It is powered by a 4,000 mAh non removable Li-po battery, and a fast charge 15W to slightly improve the charging speed. The Exynos 9620 powers this phone with mixed reviews, some saying it's good for this device while other me included are Abit skeptical about it and would have preferred the Helio G90T.

The Design.

The A50 is a beutifuly designed Smartphone, one that easily stands out from it's  competition. It might not be as cool as the Xiaomi Mi 10, but we must give it to Samsung for the great job they have done here.  Though some might argue that the phone borrows it's good looks from the Galaxy M30, it's still good to have a phone that you would be proud to walk around with.

Despite being made of plastic, the back of the phone looks really impressive, something the recently launched Samsung Galaxy M51 lacks. It's high polish and gradient finish gives it a much more premium look with lovely color gradients every time light falls on it. The only dissapointment here is that plastic backs are largely fingerprint magnets and are pron to scratches most of the time, except a few that have gone against the law. If you finally settle for this phone due to it's impressive specs and pricing, then you might need to consider using a back casing.

At just 166g, the phone is one of the lightest available currently in the market, and if you're that person that loves using your device single handed then this is a phone for you. The reduced weight could be largely attributed to the blastic back as well as the rather small 4,000 mAh battery. At the moment we are seeing phones with quite huge batteries, like the M30's 5,000 mAh, the realme C12 6,000 and the massive 7,000 mAh of the Galaxy M51.

All the buttons are at the right places, with the volume rockers and the power button at the right side and at the Left is a SIM tray that houses dual SIM cards and a micro-SD card. At the bottom is the speaker grill, a USB-C port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Samsung t went an extra mile and gave us an in-display fingerprint scanner. Practically this is more preferred than the side or rear mounted fingerprint scanner, but if you won't like it you can opt for the inbuilt face unlock.

The front of the phone is largely made of the 6.4 inch Super AMOLED display, safe for the  waterdrop notch and the slightly pronounced bottom chin as well as thin bezels at the sides.

At the back are the Triple cameras and it's LED flashes neatly arranged in an almost square black rectangle. There is no camera pumb and this would have been really great if the overall body finish hade been made to complement it. 

Below the camera is a Samsung logo that is placed vertically and the edges are slightly curved to improve it's grip when held with one hand.

Samsung are always fond of single Sim and dual hybrid phones, but this time they gave us an option to choose between a single or dual Sim phone. We are pretty sure if you were to buy this phone from Safaricom you would end up with the Single Sim. Why? Everyone hates Competition.

Display.

The A50 has a 6.4 inch Super AMOLED display with  a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a pixel density of 403 ppi.

This  quite an impressive display  and you will have a good viewing experience. Once you get used to it, I don't think you will ever think of the likes of Infinix Note 7 or those cheap phones that have a 720 p resolution and a pixel density of as low as 250 ppi.

Be it online streaming, gaming or any other task that will glue you to this phone, you will get a good experience that's worth your money. 

Software.

For a long time Samsung have been using their in-house Exynos chipsets, especially with their M phones, something that many have complained about, due to it's heating when under heavy use. Apparently it is the same case here, and we have the Exynos 9610 peering this Smartphone. It is a 10nm fabricated Chipset with an Octa-core (4 x 2.3 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4 x 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU backed by 4 or 6 GB RAM and 64 or 128 GB of internal storage. It would be good if you can get the 6GB/128 GB in order to have a better gaming as well as multitasking experience. 

Being a 2019 phone, it ships with Android 9.0(pie) atop The One UI 2.0 skin, but luckily it is Android 10 ready. The One UI slightly affects the user experience with some ad pop ups, but we can't compare it with the likes of Infinix XOS or Tecno's HIOS with come with disgusting bloatware and ads.

Apart from one or two bloatware it  receivers timely software updates, and has a number of interesting features you can try out and see which suits your personality or situation.

Cameras.

Apart from the good display, another interesting features of this phone is the cameras. The triple-camera setup looks simple but produces some good results under good Lighting conditions, better than those of it's close rivals except the Camon 16 Premier. It is made up of a 25 MP primary camera, an 8 MP Ultra wide lens, a 5 MP depth sensor.  

At it's price tag we don't expect the luxury of  8K videos, but we feel Samsung should have done a better job here and give us at least 2k resolution video capture. Their 1080p is as basic as it gets, something we can get from a 10K Smartphone. 

In front is a single 25 MP wide selfie camera that can also take videos of 1080p resolution.

Conclusion.

Samsung is a brand that has proofed itself over and over and it's phones are quite good in terms of performance and with good looks that are usually hard to come by.

Though at first it did struggle with mid-range and budget Smartphones especially in markets outside Europe and US, it is finally back on track thanks to the A series and M series Smartphones.

The A50 is a good phone that justifies it's price, and if you don't mind the plastic then you will love playing around with this device.
