The asking price places the V20 at the top mid-range segment, a price category that is less ventured by many manufactures in developing countries due to low device purchases. But still it is a quite competitive segment largely dominated by Xiaomi, realme and Samsung.
Seen as the successor to the Vivo V19 the V20 has a number of interesting specs that has already given it a good reception being the first phone to launch in the Kenyan market with Android 11 out if the box.
The phone is also trendy and sleek, with a thin metallic and glass body, an AMOLED display as well as a 33W fast charge support.
The major selling point of this phone however are the cameras and specifically the front 44MP selfie camera with an impressive performance including advanced AI algorithms and 4K video recording.
Since it's first debut in the country in November 2019, Vivo showed a strong resolve to give us a chance to own an international Smartphone with the same specs and performance as in other countries. It's focus on the selfie camera performance has also been one of Vivo's strengths since the launch of the Vivo V17 Pro with the first Dual pop up selfie cameras.
The V20 was first Launched in Thailand September 21st and became available for sale in India the following month.
The Vivo V20 features a 6.44 inch AMOLED display slightly smaller than the 6.7 inch of the Samsung Galaxy M51 which is one of it's strongest rivals. It has a Full HD + display of 1080 x 2400 pixels and this makes a good display for watching videos and playing games.
It has a Glass front and back, the AG Matte finish giving the phone a perfect premium finish that is further heightened by the color shades. Surprisingly the phone is made of a polycarbonate frame instead of a metallic one, and one major reason for this according to Vivo is to reduce it's weight which is at just 171g making it one of the lightest mid-range phone.
The phone ships with Android 11 atop the Funtouch skin, one of the very first phones to come with Android 11 out of the box. Going by Vivo's past trends tis phone could be entitled to an Android 12 update. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, a powerful mid-range processor already powering a number of mid-range phones including the Samsung Galaxy A52, Galaxy A72 and Xiaomi Mi 8 pro among other great phones. the Snapdragon 720G is a 7nm fabricated gaming chipset with an Octa-core CPU that has a top clock-speed of 2.3 GHz.
You can choose between two memory Variants of 64 or 128 GB both with 8GB RAM and available in three color variants of Sunset Melody, Midnight Jazz and Moonlight Sonata
In the camera department the Vivo V20 comes with a total of four Cameras, three in the rear and one in front. The rear cameras are made up of a primary 64MP wide lens, an 8MP ultrawide lens and a 2MP depth sensor.
The 64MP rear camera has a very good performance and can also shoot 4K videos. In front is a single 44MP selfie camera, one of the highlights of this phone.
The V20 is powered by a non removable 4,000 mAh battery which looks slightly small for such a powerful phone but the 33W fast charge support is a huge relief.
Immediately after it's Kenyan launch on January 5th, the Vivo V20 began selling in a number of Vivo accredited retail stores both offline and online. The Vivo V20 Jumia price is Ksh. 45,999, the same price the phone launched with. The phone is not yet available in many other line stores, and we could see a slight price variation once it becomes widely available.
At such a price the V20 faces a stiff Competition from already available sub 45k smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy M51 and the Xiaomi Mi Note 10. The Galaxy M51 is currently retailing at Ksh. 45,599, and the Mi Note 10 is available for Ksh. 44,999.
While the three phones have almost the same features and specifications, there is at least a single spec that sets one offer the other. While the Galaxy M51 is proud of it's 7,000 mAh battery, the Mi Note 10 is boasting of it's 108MP primary camera. On it's part the V20 is banking on it's Android 11 support, the powerful 44MP selfie camera and the 7.4 mm slim design.
