Tecno Phantom series: All Tecno phantom phones released till date.

Tecno Phantom series smartphones

Tecno have just released the much awaited Phantom 9, a true 2019 midranger with some of the best specs that can only be  found on a high end device.
Some of these including a full HD AMOLED display, an AI triple camera set up and 6GB of RAM.
This awesome spec sheet puts the Phantom 9 well at the top of the Phantom series, which is Tecno's flagship series.
Founded in 2006, Tecno now has presence in over 60 countries, well known for it's affordable smartphones with a focus in developing countries including Africa and parts of Asia.
What has made Tecno successful in these markers that tech giants struggle to penetrate is their focus on the specs that matter most in such regions including large battery capacity, large screens and affordability.
In oder to stamp it's presence in this market which was then largely dominated by Samsung, Tecno launched a number of smartphones in 2013, a gamble that paid off.
Among the over 10 phones it launched that year was what was going to be the first Phantom phone; the Phantom A1, also known as the F7.
Seen as the immediate successor of the N7, the A1, apart from closely resembling the Samsung galaxy S3, had some of the best specs for a 2013 phone.
While both the N7 and F7 had 5 inch screens, the A1 had a 1 GB RAM, the first Tecno phone to have such amount of RAM, and had a screen resolution of 720 x 1280, apparently also the first Tecno phone to feature HD display, an upgrade from the 480 x 800 of the N7.
It also featured a bigger battery of 2100 mAh battery up from the 1600 mAh of the N7.
Impressed by the response they got from the Phantom A, Tecno released another three Phantom phones by the end of 2013.
These were the Phantom A plus, A2 and the A3, in that order, each one much better than the previous.
Though the A+ had similar screen size and resolution as that of F7, it was the first in this series to be powered by an octa-core chipset, and had a much better camera of 13 MP.
On it's part, the Phantom 2 was the first Tecno phone to feature a full HD display of 1080 x 1920 pixels, as well as the first to run on Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
In order to encourage it's customers, these Phantom phones came with a free power bank, flip case cover and screen protector.
In 2014, Tecno launched the Phantom Z which was the first phone in this series to feature a 2 GB RAM and a faster processor with a quad-core 2.0 GHz, much better than the 1.5 GHz found in it's predecessors.
However, it was not until September 2015 that Tecno proofed itself capable of giving us a high-end smartphone at an affordable price, when it launched the Phantom 5.
Featuring a candy bar design and 5.5 inch screen, the Phantom 5 was the first Tecno phone to have a finger print scanner, neatly placed at the back. It also had a bigger RAM of 3 GB and run on Android 5.1(Lollipop).
Tecno also shifted from the white and black which was common in previous phantom phones and for the first time the Phantom 5 came in an amazing Champagne Gold, a color that has become associated with this Series.
In fact it is quite unfortunate that Tecno have decided to drop this color in the Phantom 9 and instead decided to copy Oppo with Aurora.
In the following year, I.e, September 2016, Tecno launched the Phantom 6 and 6 +.
Up to now these are my favourite Tecno phones in terms of look, with an amazing design and the beautiful Champagne Gold. In fact, the Phantom is the slimmest phone in this series, with just a 6.2 mm thickness. It is even slimmer than the Phantom 9 by a whooping 1.7 mm.
While the 6+ had a single 21 MP rear camera, the Phantom 6 was the first to have a dual camera set up with a 13 MP and a 5 MP depth sensor.
In 2017, Tecno didn't release a Phantom phone, and in 2018 released the Phantom 8 which has been the king of this series till the launch of the Phantom 9.
The Phantom 8 didn't look quite impressive, though it had a bigger RAM than the 6 plus. It's design is quite classical, a much back slide from the Phantom 6 and 6+.
In order to maintain its price range, Tecno has constantly maintained the use of Mediatek chipsets in all Phantom phones, instead of going for the Qualcomm Snapdragon which would raise the price.
They also know that in their key markets, processor type is not of much importance, and those who do have enough money to go for much expensive brands.
