The Nokia 5.3 is quite a beautiful piece of craftsmanship with a good processor to match it's looks and a screen big enough for your gaming and streaming. Being part of the Android one program, the phone quarantees timely security and software updates, meaning it will remain competitive for a number of years to come.
It is available in three variants of 3 GB, 4GB or 6 GB RAM with 64 GB of internal storage. Though we would have loved to see the phone come with 128 GBs of storage, there's an option to use an SD card. You can choose between a Single or dual SIM, but for obvious reasons I know you will prefer the dual SIM.
Nokia 5.3 Pros and cons.
Pros
- The Nokia 5.3 has a beautiful design with a premium feel and look. The beautiful teardrop notch and the excellent finish give this phone a much more premium look and feel.
- Good clean User Interface thanks to Android one Certification Wich ensures zero bloatware as well as timely security and software updates. This means despite shipping with Android 10, the Nokia 5.3 is Android 11 ready and will receive the update as soon as it begins rolling.
- 20:9 aspect ratio good for watching videos and gaming.
- Good battery performance.
Cons:
- Low display quality, there are phones with better display at the same price.
- Plastic body may not be something good for it's price.
- Slightly below bar camera performance.

The Nokia 5.3 has a retail price of around $ 189.0 in USA which is practically almost the same price in other Nokia markets. The phone is available in a number of retail stores including Amazon.
With such a price, the Nokia 5.3 has a long list of Competitors depending on the RAM size you choose.
It's strongest Competitors include the Nokia 6.2 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro. At the same price. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro features a slightly smaller screen at 6.53 inch, but the FHD + display of 1080 x 2340 with HDR support and 450 nits of brightness is a big plus over the Nokia 5.3
It also comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 both in front and back, while the 5.3 has Gorilla Glass 3 in front only. I
350 ppi pixel density is quite good and you will enjoy watching videos and playing games with this phone.
Talking of games, the Redmi Note 8 Pro was the first phone to feature the Mediatek Helio G90T processor, a mid-range gaming chipset that can comfortably handle all games you throw at it including high graphic ones. Other phones with the Helio G90T include Infinix Zero 8, realme 6 and Tecno Camon 16 Premier all costing some shillings shy of the $ 300 mark.

Beautiful Design.
Just as mentioned earlier, the Nokia 5.3 is an elegant smartphone with good looks and software to match. The phone retains Nokia's simple yet elegant design, with an all waterdrop display and a Nokia logo at the lower chin.
It is made of a Glass front,a plastic back as well as plastic frame for obvious reasons; to keep the cost of the device as low as possible. The polycarbonate back has a metallic finish, and is quite resistant to fingerprint smudges.
All the buttons are just like what we see in other Nokia smartphones, but the circular camera setup will attract your attention. Just like the Nokia 8.3, the cameras are arranged so that they have a smiley look, one that makes you smile each time you stare at it. This could also be an extra move by HMD to try and make this a youth focused Smartphone, without discriminating one gender over the other.
The Nokia 5.3 also features a fingerprint sensor placed at the rear just below the camera module. It also supports face recognition, and you can choose which unlock feature best works for you.
The horizontal Nokia branding at the centre completes the back look.
Big beautiful display.
The Nokia 5.3 is marketed under the slogan Go big, Go beyond, largely attributed to it's 6.55 inch screen. It might not look that huge, since we've gotten used to massive displays from the likes of Infinix Note 7 and Tecno Spark 5 Air among other phones, but as per Nokia terms that's quite huge. Infact the 5.3 screen is bigger than the highly priced Nokia 8.1.
Despite the big display, we're somewhat dissapointed by it's low resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels which results in a very low a pixel density of just 268 ppi. We have been very hard on Infinix for their low resolution displays, and we won't be different with Nokia here. We expect them to do a much better job next time and give us something more premium when they launch the successor to this device. The phone has 450 nits of brightness, good enough for you to see your screen menu outdoors. It also has a Gorilla Glass 3 protection which is another plus.
Software performance.
This phone comes with Android 10 out of the box, and we expect it to receive Android 11 update very soon. Being part of Android one program, it is entitled to timely software and security updates, an advantage of almost all Nokia smartphones and other selected phones from other brands which have Android one Certification. Another major plus for Android one is the clean Android interface which ensures zero bloatware as it's phones come with a clean Android version with no third party skins or ads.
The Nokia 5.3 is powered by a snapdragon 665 Chipset, one of the best mid-range system on cheap. It has an Octa-core (4 x 2.0 kyro 260 Gold & 4 x 1.8 GHz kyro 260 silver) CPU and an Adreno 610 GPU. The same Chipset also powers other mid-range smartphones including the Realme 5, Xiaomi Mi A3 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 among others. The Redmi Note 8 currently retails @ Ksh. 21,999, the same price as the Nokia 5.3.
Good Cameras.
Nokia have been careful with their camera packages, usually going for some simple yet powerful lenses instead of too much camera jargon and showmanship that we see in other brands. This phone is one of the very few Nokia phones with a quad camera setup, the other being the Nokia 8.3 5G which is also available in the country. The 5.3 primary lens is a 13 MP wide lens, others being a 5 MP ultra, a 2 MP macro and a 2 MP depth sensor. You can also shoot videos upto 4K@30fps or 1080p@30fps.
The selfie camera is a single 8 MP sensor, enough for your selfie needs, including videos with a resolution of 1080p@30fps.
Battery that last upto 2 days.
Nokia has been criticed for it's rather small battery capacity, and most of their late releases have bigger batteries than their predecessors. The Nokia 5.3 has a non removable 4,000 mAh battery, which can last well over a day with normal use. The Nokia 5.3 also Supports fast charge 10W, though at it's price they should have given us 18 W.
Is Nokia 5.3 a good Phone?
To answer this let's first look at a summary of why you should go for this phone,

If you would love to have a phone with a clean UI and at a reasonable price, then the Nokia 5.3 is a good buy. However you have to first look around to see if you can get an alternative with a better display resolution, but if that's not a big deal for you then this is a good phone.
